Her father was from Tipperary and her mother from Limerick.  As a child, she later lived in Kilkenny, then Portane, County Dublin.  Anne earned a B.A. in History and Politics from University College Dublin and a Diploma in Legal Studies from King\u2019s Inns.  She was Ireland\u2019s first female representative in many of her postings, including Irish Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva and the European Union in Brussels, where she was named Diplomat of the Year by European Voice in 2004.  She was made Ambassador  to France in 2005,  and was Ireland\u2019s Permanent  Representative to the United Nations in New York, prior to her service as Ambassador to the United States from 2013 to 2017.
